H.E Air Marshal Michael Samson-Oje (Rtd) is a distinguished Ghanaian senior military officer with over four decades of service in the Ghana Armed Forces, culminating in his appointment as Chief of the Defence Staff from 2016 to 2017. He previously served as Chief of Air Staff from 2008 to 2016 and brings extensive operational, strategic, and leadership experience across air and joint defense operations. As a highly accomplished military aviator with over 12,000 flying hours and an Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), he has demonstrated a strong record in defense transformation, aviation operations, infrastructure development, high-level negotiations, and international peacekeeping.
He currently serves as a Member of the 9th Council of State , providing strategic counsel to the President on national governance, security, and policy matters. In this role, he supports executive-level decision-making through analysis, engagement, and committee participation that shapes governance and development priorities at the highest level.
In his military career, Air Marshal Samson-Oje provided overall command and strategic direction for the Ghana Armed Forces, ensuring operational readiness across land, air, and maritime domains. He led infrastructure development initiatives across all garrisons, strengthened defense strategies aligned with national security priorities, and drove modernization and transformation programs to improve efficiency, structure, and capability.
As Chief of Air Staff, he oversaw operational command of the Air Force, including the acquisition of aircraft platforms and associated systems to strengthen national air capability. He also enhanced aviation operations, logistics, and maintenance systems to improve fleet performance, safety, and regulatory compliance. Under his leadership, infrastructure expansion projects were delivered across air bases and personnel accommodation, improving both operational readiness and welfare.
Air Marshal Samson-Oje has held key appointments within the Ghana Air Force, including Air Secretary, Director Air Intelligence, Air Force Station Commander (Takoradi), Officer Commanding Flying Wing (Air Force Base, Accra), Communication Squadron Commander, and Squadron Pilot (No. 2 Squadron, Tamale 1978). He also has international experience as a Military Observer/Airfield Monitor with the United Nations Protection Force in the former Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1993, where he conducted monitoring and reporting activities that supported international peacekeeping efforts.
He served as a Board Member of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority from 2006 to 2009, contributing to aviation policy oversight and regulatory governance. His aviation experience includes the operation of aircraft such as the Falcon 900EX, Gulfstream III, Fokker 28, and other military aircraft, as well as providing air transport for multiple Heads of State of Ghana, including Hilla Limann, Jerry Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Atta Mills, John Dramani Mahama, and Nana Akufo-Addo.
Among his notable leadership and infrastructure achievements, he led the construction of a three-storey ultra-modern Air Force Headquarters and expanded and renovated Air Force Mess facilities nationwide. He delivered major accommodation projects for personnel across multiple bases, spearheaded the Air Force @ 50 Accommodation Project, and introduced new and more visible rank insignia for Ghana Air Force officers. He also oversaw aircraft acquisitions with full operational packages, including hangars, specialized vehicles, ground equipment, and training support. In the broader Ghana Armed Forces, he constructed the Military Cemetery, initiated road infrastructure development across Burma Camp and other garrisons, delivered an ultra-modern kitchen facility at 37 Military Hospital, and supported perimeter security improvements.
Following retirement, he co-established an aircraft brakes and wheels repair centre, and has also engaged in hospitality investments and small-scale fish farming for personal consumption. His professional profile is defined by strong leadership, strategic direction, operational excellence in aviation and defense, and a consistent focus on public service through transformation, infrastructure delivery, and governance support
